<講演要旨>
Certain personality characteristics place young teens at increased risk for being bullied. For example, socially withdrawn, submissive youth are at risk of being bullied -especially when they lack friends. This talk will examine interactions between person-related factors (e.g., submissiveness) and social-contextual factors (e.g., lack of friends) in increasing the risk of peer victimization. Drawing on the latest research conducted with 12- year old American students, the role of social-contextual factors in determining the type and level of distress of victims of bullying will also be reviewed. This research shows that victims in orderly classrooms feel more socially anxious than do victims in disorderly classrooms. Daily report studies, in turn, show that witnessing other students getting bullied alleviates feelings of humiliation experienced by victims of bullying. It is proposed that such social-contextual moderator effects change victims' attributions of their plight. When victims see others getting bullied, they are less likely to blame themselves and hence less likely to feel distressed about their plight.
